Privacy policy

Short version: what you type into our tools is not our business, and we built the site so that we could not read it even if we wanted to. Our articles and guides are set up to show ads through Google AdSense, which will mean cookies and a consent choice once ads go live. This page explains both sides honestly.

Who runs this site

PacketNebula is operated by Stephane Cardon. If you have a privacy question, or you want to exercise one of the rights described below, write to hello@packetnebula.com and a human will answer.

Tool inputs stay in your browser

Passwords you generate, tokens you decode, subnets you calculate: all of it is processed by JavaScript running on your machine. It is never sent to us or to anyone else. You can verify this with your browser's network inspector; no request leaves the page when you use a browser-based tool. We also keep our advertising and analytics scripts off the tool pages on purpose, so a tool that says nothing leaves your browser means exactly that.

Server-side lookups

DNS lookups and SSL checks need a server, because your browser cannot open raw TLS connections or query arbitrary DNS records. For those tools, the domain you query is sent to our lookup service, used to perform the query, and discarded. We do not store query history.

Local storage

We use your browser's localStorage to remember your theme, your effects preference and tool settings. This data never leaves your device and you can clear it at any time from your browser settings.

Advertising (Google AdSense)

Our content pages, the articles and guides, carry the Google AdSense script; we keep advertising off the tool pages on purpose. Until our AdSense application is approved, no ads are served and the script stays dormant. Once ads go live, Google and its advertising partners may read and set cookies and process some data about your visit: your IP address, approximate location, device and browser, and the pages you view, and where you consent, some of this is used to show personalized ads. Google explains its role on its partner sites page. We will update this page when ads start serving.

Analytics (Google Analytics)

We use Google Analytics 4 to understand which pages and tools get used: page views, approximate location, device and browser, and how you found us. It sets cookies (the _ga family) for that purpose. It never sees what you type into a tool, because tool inputs are processed in your browser and are not sent anywhere. You can block it with any content blocker or with Google's own opt-out add-on, and the site works exactly the same without it.

Cookies and your consent

Beyond the analytics cookies above and the small amount of local storage we use to remember your theme and tool settings, nothing else is stored on your device today. When advertising goes live, a consent message will ask whether you accept ad cookies and personalized ads before any are set. You will be able to accept, refuse, or change your mind at any time, and refusing will not stop you from reading anything here.

Your rights under the GDPR

If you are in the EU, you have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict, object to, and port your personal data, and to withdraw consent for ad cookies at any time through the consent banner. To exercise any of these, write to hello@packetnebula.com. You also have the right to complain to your data protection authority; in France that is the CNIL.

Where data goes, and for how long

Our advertising partners are global, so some data may be processed outside the European Union, including in the United States, under the safeguards those companies put in place, such as standard contractual clauses. We also keep ordinary server logs, such as the IP address and the page requested, for a short time to run and secure the site, and we do not build our own profiles of you.

Children

This site is meant for a professional, technical audience and is not directed at children under 16.
